You’ve probably heard about the Assabet Village Co-op Market, an initiative to open a full-service, community-owned grocery store in Maynard. But did you know that Maynard was home to lots of cooperative businesses – including a thriving food co-op, oil company, bank, and more – for more than 70 years?
Come hear historian David Mark as he explores Maynard’s deep cooperative roots, from the first Finnish immigrants in the 1800s to today’s efforts to build a thriving food co-op for the region. Hear about our town’s cooperative past and get inspired for the opening of the Assabet Village Co-op Market!
Our next Food Justice Committee is coming, and we want YOU there! We’re working hard to build a community-owned grocery store that increases access to healthy food for all. That means connecting with underserved populations to find out what services, products, and in-store programs will best serve folks across the Co-op Community.
All are welcome! Bring your passion and ideas and let’s build a Co-op that fosters real food justice!!!

It’s our first Co-op author talk, and it’s a big one!!!
On Wednesday, May 8, at 6:30pm, the Assabet Village Co-op Market presents Jon Steinman, author of Grocery Story: The Promise of Food Co-ops in the Age of Supermarket Giants.
Hear Steinman read from his landmark book exploring food co-ops (community-owned grocery stores) as an alternative to corporate supermarket giants. Through penetrating analysis and inspiring examples of thriving American and Canadian food co-ops, Grocery Story makes a compelling case for the transformation of the grocery store aisles as the emerging frontier in the local and good food movements. Hear why co-ops are spurring the creation of local food economies and stronger communities, while changing the global food system for the better.
Mr. Steinman will also be signing copies of his book, and you’ll hear about the Assabet Village Co-op Market, a locally sourced, community-owned grocery store opening up right here in Maynard. This event is FREE and all are welcome. We’ll see you on May 8!
