News from the Co-op: Updates from the Board

Welcome to the December update from Assabet Village Co-op Market. We’ve had a great year, with a huge milestone reached: the Board’s vote to move from Stage 2A Feasibility to Stage 2B Planning based on our work evaluating market demand, financial feasibility, and organizational capacity.

We’re now just 3!! Owners from 600, which means we’re nearly 2/3rds of the way to our next Owner Milestone – 900 Owners to secure a site, which we’re already searching for.  And we’re in the process of hiring an Outreach Coordinator, to help us develop a membership plan and get us to that next milestone.

We still have tote bags available (email info@assabetvillage.coop to order yours), as well as mugs and shirts that can be purchased from our Cafe Press store.

Updates from the Board

New Directors Rae & Lisa are getting up to speed, with Rae joining the hiring committee searching for our new Outreach Coordinator. They will be attending CBLD101 training along with Treasurer Jason in Keene NH in the beginning of January.
Over the next few months, the board will
undertake the creation of our Cooperative Governance policy framework. This framework will connect our Cooperative values to governance at all levels: staff, management, Board and Owners. It clarifies the different components and roles of cooperative organizations. And our policies will guide us as we work together towards our goal – running the Co-op!  The four pillars of Cooperative Governance are:

  • Teaming. Successfully working together to achieve common purpose.
  • Accountable Empowerment. Successfully empowering people while at the same time holding them accountable for the power granted.
  • Strategic Leadership. Successfully articulating the cooperative’s direction/purpose and setting the organization up for movement in this direction.
  • Democracy. Successfully sustaining a culture in which people choose meaningful ways to participate for both individual and common good.

We will be sharing more on Cooperative Governance in the new year, including meetings for Owners to get input on our policies.

Outreach Coordinator Search

The hiring committee has been busy for the past couple of months looking to hire our first employee, an Outreach Coordinator! The committee, comprised of 2 Board members and 5 Co-op Owners, has been hard at work creating and promoting the job description, working out the HR and legal requirements, and evaluating the candidates. We received many inquiries (from as far away as Washington, D.C.!) and conducted initial phone screenings. We’ve narrowed down the search, and are now conducting in-person interviews. In the next month, we’ll choose 2 or 3 candidates to go for an interview with the Board of Directors, and the Board will make the final decision. We look to get our first employee on board before the end of the year. We’ll keep you posted on our progress!

In Cooperation,

Board of Directors
